There are many different species of trees and shrubs used to create hedges all these different species need to be pruned and maintained in different ways. For example Beech hedges are slow growing and can be pruned less often whereas hedges made from coniferous trees grow very fast and need caring for much more often. Conifers if left for too long can end up browning off on the inside and cannot be taken back as far as they have been in the past. It is recommended to trim the sides of your conifer hedge at least twice a year to get them nice and tight.
